Dhoom 2 was a fashion breakthrough, with all the characters looking like never seen before in Bollywood. The exceptionally stylish looks of our favourite Greek-God Hrittik Roshan, the most beautiful Aiswaria Rai Bacchhan & other leading characters made us all awe-struck! Haven’t they? The tanned bodies, free flowing hair, ripped jeans, acid-washed t-shirts, micro skirts, waist cut-outs, lady-mafia outfits, bikini tops & all that attitude. No doubt this movie is one of the most stylish movies of Bollywood & we all love it even today. Despite being the negative character, we can’t help but crush over & over again the mysterious crime master ‘A’ & competing with equal charm & appeal was his female counterpart. The leading characters were styled by Anaita Shroff Adjania’s (Vogue’s Fashion Director), this was her first bollywood movie as a hardcore costume designer. Before styling the actors, she demanded they all lose weight since the movie focused on fashionable, good-looking people and all their hard work really paid off great!
We can’t deny this movie has some of the best fashionable looks ever seen in Bollywood. The modern-day Rajputana looks, heavily layered Rajasthani ghagras to simplified & more contemporary ethnic wears, contemporary cholis, traditional bandhani & mirror work embroidery, this movie surely blows our mind. & on top of it all, the charm & elegance of everyone’s favourite Deepika Padukone & traditional styling take of flamboyant Ranveer Singh. The heavily embellished lehenga choli worn by Deepika in all the songs were exceptionally beautiful & gave us ethnic wear styling goals, we also loved the Deepika Padukone’s all-white ghagra-choli in the seductive song Ang laga De, which was quite the contrary from rest of her outfits throughout the movie. Along with the awesome outfits, the makeup & hairdo’s from free flowing to messy high buns, we loved it all, haven’t we?
Khoobsurat is without a doubt brings some of the best contemporary fashion looks. With the bright & bold prints, deconstructed Indian wear, uncanny pairing, contemporary dhotis and blindingly bright colors, Sonam again gives us serious style inspiration & we can’t quite get over the fun outfits she has worn in the movie from the quirky colors to the fun pairing, the free flowing long hairdo, the eye wears, the tops, the bottom wears, the scarfs, everything. Priyanka Chopra as well as the dashing male actors looks absolutely smashing hot with city surf style floral shirts, pastel for men, sequinned bikinis and micro-length dresses giving the perfect Miami vibe. We loved the casual out fits as much as we loved the ethnic ones, thegreen & maroon ensombles seen on the leading cast at the end of the movie in the video song of ‘Maa Da Laandla Bigaad Gaya’ along with the most talked about outfit of that year, Priyanka Chopra’s nude sari in the song, ‘Desi Girl’ worn with a bralet-blouse and draped cleverly to flaunt her perfect body & not to forget the one piece golden bikini she wears. The movie is hilarious, fun & refreshing to watch & is among one of the first Bollywood movies that reflects on homosexuality. With the ever interesting topic of love triangle, the charm of Priyanka, John & Abhishek one is sure to have a lot of fun. Plus, Priyanka’s character works in a fashion magazine hence you get a bit of exposure to insider fashion. 8. BAJIRAO MASTANI:
One of biggest periodical film of Bollywood having the Bhanshani enchantment, no doubt this movie is filled with grandeur. Bhansali films are known for best their periodical presentation, may that be the sets, the costumes, the makeup & hairdo. So yeah you know what to expect when it comes to a Bhansali film, & with Deepika & Ranveer starring, yet again after Ram-Leela, it had to be epic. With the Hyderabadi Nizam-inpsired anarkalis, heavy angrakhas, embroidered shararas, the traditional 11 meters Peshwin style Marathi sari and the signature nathni seen on both Deepika & Priyanka, this movie was filled with rustic style. Even Ranveer’s costume was well constructed according to the era. Every look of the cast was mesmerising & we admired them throughout the movie. The grace with which the leading characters carried the periodical costumes really made us fall foe Indian ethnic wear. But we all know one look & one look alone became an emblame for this movie & whenever we talk of the film we remember it. & that gorgeous, bewitching look is none other than Deepika Padukone a.k.a Mastani’s dewy face, as she twirled in a soft-green dhani and a Muslim izhaar pyjama seen in the song ‘Deewani Mastani’.
Another grand & enchanting movie by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is Devdas. This movie is without a doubt cult-classic. Everyone knows Devdas, even if they haven’t seen the movie. You see someone drunk, crying over lost love, you instant call them Devdas, we know we all do. Or at least did once in our life. You got the idea. This is another movie that brings out the best of periodical fashion. Based in Bengali, with the most amazing cast starring SRK, Aishwaria & Madhuri, they were ought to magnify the beauty of everything they wear. Throughout the movies we see a lot of mesmerising outfits from Bengali saris, mirror-work lehengas, bright hues and voluminous anarkalis reflecting the Bengali royal fashion of that period. The outfits that stood out the most was the Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit twinning in white and red Bengali saris, matching everything from their decadent jewellery to celebratory dancing. And the green ghaghra-choli wore by Madhuri Dixit in the song ‘Maardaala’ designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla for Madhuri Dixit weighed an unbelievable 30 kilos which was later replaced by a lighter outfit weighting 16 kilos, so that the actress could perform her dance sequence in it. The story is engaging & fun to watch, with some of bollywoods best songs of tht time, this movie has without a doubt some of bollywoodsbest styles. The duo, Bunty and Babli wore close to 100 outfits which were all designed & styled by Aki Narula.
